Praise & Prayer update (February 2009)

    • Praise God for the good health we have enjoyed this past year! Pray for continued good health.

    • Praise God for the great progress Paula has made in her diet & lifestyle. Pray for her as she tries to continue maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

    • Praise God for our three precious children, Nicholas, Joy, and Hannah. Pray that they will come to know, love, and serve God. Pray that they will develop in maturity, make good decisions, and walk with the Lord.

    • Praise God for the BJU HomeSat program that we have been using for the kids home school. Pray for wisdom and time management as we teach our kids.

    • Pray for us in our relationships: with God, with each other, with our children, with others - that we would be the man and woman, husband and wife, Dad and Mom that God wants us to be.

    • Praise God for good progress with our NTMAA system. Pray for wisdom, guidance, and unity as we work on our various NTM programming projects.

    • Praise God for the successful installations of our NTMAA system in 2008 (in Mozambique, Indonesia, Panama, and Guinea). Pray for safety, good health, and for John to be a blessing, as he travels to Colombia (in February) and Paraguay (in April or May) to install the NTMAA there.

    • Praise God for the progress that Hannah has made in her speech. Pray for Hannah (and really our whole family) as we seek to understand and help her through the difficulties that she has recently begun dealing with.

    • Pray that God would give us humble hearts and make us a real blessing here at NTM Headquarters.

    • Praise God for the work He is doing around the world, reaching the unreached with the Gospel of Christ. Pray that He would continue to raise up folks to be partners with us in this important task - through going, giving, and praying.

Prayer: Upcoming Colombia NTMAA Installation (02/03/2009)

On February 23, my co-worker, Nathan Whatley, and I are planning to head down to Colombia for three weeks. Our goal is to install our NTMAA system (accounting, personnel records, and purchasing/inventory/sales subsystems) and to provide our fellow missionaries there with appropriate training. We would appreciate your prayers for safety, good health, and that we will be a blessing.

    Prayer: Hannah's OCD Difficulties (02/03/2009)

We would appreciate your prayers on the home front also. In our 2008 Annual Report we mentioned that our youngest daughter, Hannah (age 9), has recently been having some difficulties.

After observing Hannah’s recent behaviors, we saw our family doctor and then had an evaluation with a specialist; he concluded that Hannah is dealing with a neurobiological disorder referred to as OCD (Obsessive Compulsive disorder). For more information about OCD, please visit www.JPOliver.com/ocd.

We would appreciate your prayers that God, the Great Healer, would provide healing for our precious Hannah, and guide us as we seek to help Hannah (through medication and/or therapy).

Praise & Prayer update (July 2008)

    • Praise: Successful installation in Indonesia. John, along with his co-worker, Nathan Whatley, travelled to Indonesia to help install and provide training for their NTM Accounting & Administrative (NTMAA) system. The NTM Accounting system is being by the field bookkeepers to keep track of the finances; the NTM Personnel Records system is being used by the personnel administrators to keep track of personnel information for NTM missionaries serving in Indonesia.
    • Pray: Upcoming NTMAA installation in Guinea. John is planning to travel in September to Guinea (West Africa) to install the NTMAA system. This will be a relatively long trip (3.5 weeks) since John will be installing and providing training for three major areas: accounting, personnel records, and purchasing/inventory/sales (which will be used by the NTM Guinea supply buyer). Pray for guidance as John seeks to prepare the various programs and databases in preparation for this installation.

    Praise & Prayer requests (March 25, 2007)

    • Praise: Successful installation for Senegal. John, along with NTM accountant, Virgil Wuthrich, spent nearly three weeks in Senegal (West Africa) installing and providing training for their NTM Accounting & Administrative (NTMAA) system. The accounting modules will be used by the field bookkeepers. John also installed the purchasing/inventory/sales module for the supply buyer, who buys groceries and other items to deliver (via bi-weekly supply flights) to tribal missionaries and to sell in a small store for the local missionaries in Dakar. The installation and transition went well and we are happy to provide our NTMAA system as a tool to help our fellow missionaries who are ministering in Senegal.
    • Praise: Nicholas' teeth. Nicholas has been wearing braces for almost two years. He had oral surgery in August to expose one of his upper cuspids that was not coming down. We are encouraged that the tooth is now coming into place and are hopeful that he will get his braces off later this year.
    • Pray: Transition of NTBI Jackson bookstore to computerized inventory system. John has been working with the finance and bookstore staff at our New Tribes Bible Institute in Jackson, Michigan, as they are starting to transition their bookstore to our computerized purchasing/inventory/sales module. Pray for a smooth transition and that our programs will be a blessing to them.
    • Pray: Preparation for NTM Canada installation. We have been working for some time now on enhancing our NTMAA system to better meet the needs of our NTM Canada headquarters. We hope to travel to Canada later this year to do further testing and then return once more for the final installation and transition to the new system. Pray for guidance as we continue to design and program the remaining enhancements.
    • Praise: Paula diet & exercise program. We thank the Lord that Paula has made great progress on her diet & exercise program; she's now near her goal weight with a total loss of nearly 100 lbs. In celebration of this great progress as well as our 15th wedding anniversary (which was actually a couple years ago), we are planning to take a special vacation to Hawaii in May! Thanks to my mom & stepdad for offering to take care of our kids and also for allowing us to use their timeshare points.
    • Pray: Paula's heels and finger. We would appreciate continued prayer for Paula's heels as she has been dealing with plantar fasciitis and heel spurs. Paula has also been having a problem with one of her fingers (possibly a bacterial or fungal infection called paronychia) with inflammation around her fingernail. We would appreciate your prayer for healing for her heels and finger.

    Praise & Prayer requests (September 1, 2006)

    • Praise: Successful trip to our NTM Canada headquarters. We have determined that with some enhancements (primarily in the area of EFT donations, ministry expense claims, and payroll), our NTMAA Accounting & Administrative system (which has been used at our U.S. headquarters for a number of years) should meet the needs of our NTM Canada headquarters quite well also. Our initial trip this past June was to research their needs more thoroughly and provide an introduction to our NTMAA system.
    • Praise: Good progress in our NTMAA system. Over the recent months and years, we have been able to add significant new capabilities to our NTMAA system. These new capabilities have helped us leverage our work by making the system available to other NTM locations.:
      • multi-currency support
      • outstation support
      • personnel records synchronization
      • enhancements to our purchasing/inventory/sales module
    • Pray: Guidance in scheduling/prioritizing upcoming trips. With the greater capabilities, there has been a greater interest in our system by various NTM locations around the world. One of my co-workers, Rodd Harris, is planning to install the system in Thailand this November. There is a possibility that I may make a trip this fall to our New Tribes Bible Institute in Jackson, Michigan or to our Missionary Training Center in Camdenton, Missouri. Our NTM Senegal field has also expressed interest in the system and I may also make a perliminary research trip to our NTM Australia headquarters; Paula may accompany me on the Australia trip (yeah!) and is hoping that we can route through Hawaii.
    • Praise and Prayer: Health. We're thankful for the good health we've been enjoying. We would appreciate continued prayer for Paula's heels as it looks like she may be dealing with plantar fasciitis and heel spurs.
    • Pray: Paula's finger. Paula has also been having a problem with one of her fingers (possibly a bacterial or fungal infection called paronychia) with inflammation around her fingernail. We would appreciate your prayer for healing for her finger.

    Praise & Prayer requests (March 25, 2006)

    • Praise: Virgil Wuthrich (an NTM accountant) and I returned recently from a successful trip to Bolivia. We installed our NTM Accounting & Administrative (NTMAA) system for the NTM Bolivia bookkeepers in the main finance office in Cochabamba and at the guest home in Santa Cruz. We also installed the system for the NTM pilot, Tony Murrin, who is also based in Cochabamba. Tony will be using the system to track flight information, charge flights, and distribute budgeted flight income.
    • Praise: On Friday, March 10, the day after we arrived home, Tony was flying from Cochabamba (with some missionary passengers) when his engine lost power. We thank God that he was able to make a successful emegency landing on the main highway, narrowly missing a collision with a double-decker bus!
    • Praise & Prayer: We're thankful for the good health we've been enjoying. We would appreciate prayer, though, for Paula's heel as it appears that she may be dealing with some plantar fasciitis.
    • Praise & Prayer: Paula has been eating healthy and exercising most every day and is approx. halfway to her weight loss goal. Pray that she will continue to make progress with the Lord's help.
    • Pray for guidance for John and his fellow programmers as they - make some major enhancements to the personnel records system, enhance the receipting programs to be able to process electronic check (EFT) donations from the NTM website, and prepare for an upcoming June trip to the NTM Canada headquarters (with an eventual goal of utilizing the NTMAA system there also).

    Praise & Prayer requests (January 5, 2006)

    • Praise God for good progress with our NTMAA system and the installations in Mexico, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. Pray for wisdom, guidance, and unity as we work on our various NTM programming projects.

    Praise & Prayer requests (November 2, 2005)

    • Praise: We are thankful for the good health we are continuing to enjoy!
    • Praise: John and his co-worker, Rodd Harris, were able to complete the programming that will allow the NTM Personnel Records system to communicate with our web server. This capability will allow various NTM locations to use the Personnel Records system and to stay synchronized with our main personnel database here at NTM Headquarters.
Rodd left Oct. 21 to install the NTM Personnel Records system in Australia and Papua New Guinea.
    • Pray for us in our relationships - with God, with each other, with our children, with co-workers, with family & friends, with others whose paths we cross on life's journey.
    • Pray for wisdom in training and homeschooling our children.
    • Pray for humble, gracious, loving hearts for ourselves and our children.

    Praise & Prayer requests (August 28, 2005)

    • Praise: We are thankful for the good health we have been enjoying!
    • Pray for John and his co-worker, Rodd Harris, as they prepare the distributed NTM Personnel Records system for installation in Australia and Papua New Guinea; Rodd will be traveling there in October/November. Pray for guidance as John adds programming to synchronize the personnel tables across the internet.
    • Pray for wisdom and encouragement for Paula as she homeschools Nicholas, Joy, and Hannah.

    • Praise: The new semester has started at our Bible institutes and the halls are filled with students. The Purchasing/Inventory/Sales subsystem which John recently installed for the bookstore at New Tribes Bible Institute (in Waukesha, Wisconsin) appears to be working well for them.
    • Pray for humble, gracious, loving hearts for ourselves and our children.

    Praise & Prayer requests (May 26, 2005)

    • We are thankful that John's stepmom, Kelly Oliver, is doing better after her recent bout with shingles. She continues to deal with other chronic health problems, though, and would appreciate our prayers.
    • Praise: John had a good and successful trip to Chihuahua, Mexico, helping to install our NTM Accounting & Administrative system and train the bookkeepers in its use.
    • Pray for wisdom and encouragement for Paula as she homeschools Nicholas, Joy, and Hannah.
    • Praise: As part of our homeschooling program, we are planning to subscribe to some Bob Jones instructional programs next year, broadcast from their studio in Greenville, SC. Some friends are passing on their Bob Jones satellite dish and receiver to us (for which we are thankful), so we will only need to pay the monthly subscription fee.
    • Pray for guidance as John adds some enhancements to our Purchasing/Inventory/Sales subsystem. He plans to travel to New Tribes Bible Institute (Waukesha, Wisconsin) in early July to install this subsystem for their bookstore there.
    • Pray for humble, gracious, loving hearts for ourselves and our children.

    Praise & Prayer requests (April 13, 2005)

    • We're thankful for the good health we've been enjoying. We would appreciate prayer, though, for my stepmom, Kelly Oliver, who has several health problems and now also has shingles.
    • John will be heading down to Chihuahua, Mexico (April 26 - May 14) with two co-workers, Rodd Harris and Virgil Wuthrich to install the NTM Accounting & Administrative system there. Please pray for safety, good health, a successful installation, and that we'll be a blessing to our co-workers in Mexico.

    Praise & Prayer requests (January 5, 2005)

    • Praise God for the progress with John's dental problems and improvement with his prostatitis! Pray for wisdom, guidance, and complete healing for his teeth and prostate.

    Praise/Thanks (July 1, 2004)

    • Praise: John is continuing to make progress with his teeth. Our dentist has been adjusting his bite, as some teeth (including his upper eyeteeth that now have root canals) were being hit improperly by other teeth, causing them to hurt.
    • Praise: The installation of our NTM Accounting & Administrative (NTMAA) system at New Tribes Bible Institute in Jackson, Michigan has been successfully completed. John spent two weeks there, installing the system and working with the finance office staff, explaining the various programs and concepts.
    • Praise: Joy's cast is off. While playing in the hallway with a friend, Joy had landed on her arm and broke one of the bones clean through. She ended up wearing a bright neon pink cast for nearly six weeks. The itchiness was quite intense at times, but we are thankful that she made it through it and is doing well now.
    • Praise: Paula and the kids had an excellent trip to Tucson. They were able to spend time with Paula's mom & sisters and other friends in the Tucson area.

    Prayer requests (July 1, 2004)

    • Pray for: Good health for our family. We have had a number of health trials lately (John's teeth, recurrance of c.diff. bacterial infeaction, Joy's broken arm, Paula's damaged tendon in her right hand, Nicholas' headaches). We are doing pretty well right now, but we want to see if dietary changes will have any effect on Nicholas' headaches.
    • Pray for: Wisdom in homeschooling & child training. Our kids have a lot to learn, both academically and spiritually, and we as parents have a lot to learn too, in being good parents and effective teachers.
    • Pray for: Strength & encouragement. With all that has to be done, it can be overwhelming at times.
    • Pray for: Relationships - with God and with each other. We want to walk with the Lord, with grace, love, and humility toward each other, and to see our children learning to do the same.
    • Pray for: Guidance and unity in our design & programming.

    Update on John's Teeth (March 2, 2004)

Shortly after I wrote our last newsletter (March 2004), in which I mentioned that I was thankful that I was through these problems, my upper eyeteeth (which both have root canals now) started to hurt more. I made a trip back to the dentist and he adjusted the bite on my upper left eyetooth, which is now feeling better. Please pray that my upper-right eyetooth would stop hurting also. It is not a real bad pain, but it is wearing and distracting.

In the midst of this trial, I want to thank the Lord. Thank you, Lord, for this trial. Thank you that it is short and temporary. Thank you that our time on earth is short and that we have a far greater time and better bodies to look forward to in Heaven. Thank you for the progress we have made. Thank you that it does not hurt more than it does. Thank you for the good dentist that you have led us to.

    Praise & Prayer Requests (January 11, 2004)

    • Praise God for the good health we have enjoyed most of the year. Praise God that John's clostridium difficile bacterial infection seems to now be under control. Pray for a complete resolution of the dental problems that John has been dealing with.
    • Praise God for our three precious children, Nicholas, Joy, and Hannah. Pray for wisdom and time management as we home school our kids. Pray that they will come to know, love, and serve God.
    • Pray for us in our relationships with God, with each other, with our children - that we will continue to grow to be the man and woman, husband and wife, dad and mom that God wants us to be.
    • Praise God that Hannah has continued to progress in her growth and development this past year. Pray that she will continue to learn how to make sounds properly so that her speech will be clear.
    • Praise God for the advances Paula has made in eating healthy, exercising, and trying to lose weight. Pray that Paula will continue to progress and reach her goal weight in 2004.
    • Praise God for the good progress we have made enhancing our NTM Accounting & Administrative system and for a successful installation at New Tribes Bible Institute in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Pray for wisdom, guidance, and unity as we continue to work on our various NTM programming projects.

    Update on John's Teeth (November 2, 2003)

On October 27, I was supposed to head up to Jackson, Michigan to install our NTM Accounting system at our Bible Institute there. I have been having such a difficult time with these dental problems (the aches in my upper-left teeth and jaw and associated fatigue) that I had to postpone the trip.

So far, I have seen five dentists and one endodontist, had new fillings in two teeth, had fillings replaced in two other teeth, then had two of those four fillings replaced again, then had root canals in those two teeth anyway. I also recently saw an ear/nose/throat doctor and had a CT scan to make sure I didn't have a sinus problem bothering my teeth.

At present, the two teeth with the root canals are doing better, but the two teeth behind them are still bothering me. We are looking forward to a complete resolution of these problems and symptoms and would appreciate your prayers to that end.

Faith Fellowship Church (November 2, 2003)

We have recently become involved with a new church here in Sanford. Actually, it is an old church (in that the buildings have been around for many years), but the church has recently become an independent church, changed its name to Faith Fellowship Church, and made a number of positive changes.

I have started working on a web site for the church (www.Faith-Fellowship-Church.com) and helped pick out a church accounting/administrative software package. Paula and I are helping to lead a Family Sunday School class and Paula is also helping with the women's ministry.

It is a small church; we were the first family with kids, but now we are up to nine kids in our class. Pray that God will use the church to have a positive outreach in the local community.

    Thanks & Prayer Requests (October 5, 2003)

    • Thanks for praying for Hannah; her ears have healed up nicely.
    • Thanks too for praying for my tooth. In the past ten weeks, I've seen multiple dentists and have had four fillings, but I'm still having tenderness in two teeth and some aching in my upper jaw. I would appreciate your continued prayers for healing & guidance. It's good that God is in control and we can trust in Him.

NTBI Waukesha Installation - Praise: (08/23/2003)

John worked with the finance office staff at
New Tribes Bible Institute, installing the NTM Accounting system On July 23 I headed off to our Bible Institute in Waukesha, Wisconsin for two weeks to install our NTM Accounting system there. During my time there, I worked with the NTBI finance office staff, helping to install our accounting system, transition their accounting data and operation from their existing systems, and explain and demonstrate the features and operation of our programs. We are thankful that the installation was smooth and successful.

    Prayer Requests: (08/23/2003)

We have a couple special health-related prayer requests.
    • Around July 14 my upper-left eyetooth developed a low-grade toothache, becoming sensitive to cold and tender to touch, like the pulp or the nerve is irritated or inflamed. Over the past four weeks, I have seen three dentists, each of whom has x-rayed the tooth and not seen anything wrong. Needless to say, this has been quite frustrating and has been making my life a bit difficult. We would appreciate your prayers for healing and/or guidance in finding the problem and solution.
    • Hannah has recently developed an infection in both ears. At our doctor's recommendation, we are flushing them out every day and using antibiotic drops to treat the infections. We are thankful to have found a good doctor and would appreciate your prayer for healing for Hannah's ears.

    Prayer Requests: (05/27/2003)

    • Paula has been sick with flu-like symptoms (sore throat, high fever, splitting headache) since last Wednesday (May 21). Since Saturday, Joy has also been sick with similar symptoms. We would appreciate your prayer for a swift recovery for Paula and Joy and for protection for John, Nicholas, and Hannah.

    Praise Updates: (05/15/2003)

    • This past month, our washing machine quit working (our third washing machine to break in a four year period); it wouldn't pump the water out. I had taken it apart, couldn't find anything wrong with the pump, had given up on fixing it, and was ready to buy a new/used washer. One of my co-workers encouraged me to put it back together and try to see whether the pump was turning. I put it back together, tightened up the belt to the pump, and now it's working again! Praise the Lord!
    • The master brake cylinder on our 1995 Oldsmobile also went bad recently. Some friends told us about a Christian mechanic, who was able to come by and replace the master cylinder at a reasonable price.
    • We thank the Lord for the good health we've been enjoying; I've been fighting a cold for a while, but am hopefully about over it. Hannah turned four on April 18 and is continuing to progress in her development

    • Praise God for a successful migration of our NTM Accounting & Administrative system from FoxPro for DOS to Visual FoxPro for Windows and for a successful installation at New Tribes Language Institute.
    • Pray for wisdom, guidance, and unity as we try to prioritize our various projects, continue to develop our user interface and object classes for our NTMAA system in Visual FoxPro, and plan and develop a distributed personnel records system.
    • Pray that God would give us humble hearts and make us a real blessing here at NTM Headquarters.
    • Praise God for the work He is doing around the world, reaching the unreached with the Gospel of Christ.
    • Pray that God would continue to raise up folks to be partners with us in this important task, through going, giving, or praying.

    Praise & Prayer Updates: (11/07/2002)

    • Praise: Yesterday we released version 4.50 of our NTM Accounting & Administrative system. This is the first release with our new visual forms (with grids and command buttons), a major step in our transition toward a more normal Windows look and feel.
    • Praise: In July we found out that we were pregnant with our seventh child, but in early August we had a miscarriage. It was not what we had hoped for, but we know that God knows best. It was hard, physically and emotionally, but God has given us grace. He is good and we praise Him.
    • Praise: JOhn had a safe and profitable trip to New Tribes Language Institute in Camdenton, Missouri to research their accounting and bookstore systems and processes and to demo our NTM Accounting & Administrative (NTMAA) system. It looks like our NTMAA system will meet their ll be a profitable time.

    Update on Hannah's Therapy: (06/10/2002)

We found out recently that the local school will not be able to continue Hannah's therapy.

Hannah has made a lot of progress over the past year. We are thankful for the speech/language, physical, and occupational therapy that she has been able to receive.

Pray that Hannah will continue to make good progress. We are praying especially that her speech will continue to become more clear and understandable.

Martin & Gracia Burnham: Free at Last (06/07/2002)

For the past year, we have been praying for Martin & Gracia Burnham, fellow NTM missionaries who were taken captive by Abu Sayyaf guerrillas in the Philippines on May 27, 2001. We recently received word that our prayers had been answered, although not exactly as we, in our limited understanding and perspective had hoped and desired.

On Friday, June 7, during a rescue attempt by the Philippine military, Martin Burnham was shot and killed. Gracia was also wounded (in her right thigh), but has been rescued. Their fellow hostage, Filipina nurse Deborah Yap, was also fatally shot. It is not clear whether Martin was caught in the crossfire or was executed by the guerillas when they realized that a rescue attempt was in progress.

We thank God for the opportunity the Burnhams had to suffer for His sake and we thank God that their captivity is over. We pray that God will use all of this for His glory and to increase awareness of the need for reaching the unreached around the world.

We would ask you to continue to pray for Gracia, her three children (Jeffrey, Mindy, and Zach), and Martin and Gracia's parents and extended families.

    Praise & Prayer Updates: (05/14/2002)

    • Praise: We praise the Lord that we are continuing to enjoy good health!
    • Praise & Prayer: John is continuing to enhance the NTM Accounting & Administrative system and has been making good progress on a program to extract some of the user interface elements and properties from the older FoxPro for DOS programs. His goal is to convert these into Visual FoxPro objects, classes, and tables, making use of the valuable effort that has already been invested and thus avoiding a lot of manual re-work. Pray for continued guidance in this effort.
    • Praise: Hannah turned three on April 18 and is no longer eligible for the physical, occupational, and speech/language therapy she had been receiving, but she has recently started receiving some speech/language and occupational therapy through a local school. We are encouraged at the progress Hannah has made this past year.
    • Pray: Please continue to pray for Martin & Gracia Burnham, NTM missionaries who were kidnapped on May 27, 2001 from the Dos Palmas resort (in the Philippines) where they were celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary. The Abu Sayyaf rebel group is holding the Burnhams and a Philippine nurse, Deborah Yap. Recent unconfirmed reports indicate that the Burnhams may be having some significant health problems. Pray that God will be glorified and that, if it is His good pleasure, they would be released soon.

    Praise & Prayer Updates: (04/08/2002)

    • We praise the Lord that we are all currently enjoying good health! John is thankful that the two teeth which had been bothering him after recent dental work are doing much better now.
    • Praise: On the programming front, John recently made a significant breakthrough, figuring out how to enhance the NTM Accounting system so that most of the printing can use Windows print drivers.
    • Hannah is making progress in her development. She is now talking quite a bit, but her speech is still difficult to understand. We would appreciate continued prayer for her development, physical growth, and night terrors (which continue to interfere with her sleep and ours).
    • Please continue to pray for Martin & Gracia Burnham, NTM missionaries who were kidnapped on May 27, 2001 from the Dos Palmas resort (in the Philippines) where they were celebrating their 18th wedding anniversary. The Abu Sayyaf rebel group is holding the Burnhams and a Philippine nurse, Deborah Yap. A video clip of the Burnhams (in captivity) shown on television recently made it clear that the ordeal is taking a great toll on them emotionally and physically. Pray that God will be glorified and that, if it is His good pleasure, they would be released soon.

    Praise & Prayer Updates: (03/09/2002)

    • Hannah continues to make progress in her development; it encourages us when we hear her starting to put together two or three word phrases. She appears to be growing, although quite slowly. She still has some night terrors, but perhaps not quite as often. Thanks for praying for her!
    • John was having some prostate-related symptoms recently, possibly prostatitis (inflammation or infection of the prostate). We are thankful that he is doing better now!

    Praise & Prayer Updates: (12/27/2001)

    • Praise God that we have been enjoying relatively good health this past year.
    • Praise God for our three precious children, Nicholas, Joy, and Hannah. Pray for wisdom as we seek to train up our children in the way they should go. Pray that our kids will come to know, love, and serve God.
    • Pray that we will continue to grow to be the husband and wife, dad and mom that God wants us to be.
    • Praise God that Hannah has made significant progress this past year in speech and understanding. Pray for her continued development, both in speech and other areas, as she is still behind for her age.
    • Pray also for Hannah's physical development, as she has not gained much weight this past year. Pray that her digestive system will work well. Pray for wisdom and guidance as we seek to help her.
    • Praise God that our NTM Accounting & Administrative system continues to work well here at NTM headquarters. Praise God that our NTM Aviation Accounting system is working well and meeting the needs at our NTM Aviation center in McNeal, Arizona.
    • Praise God that a decision has been made to migrate our NTMAA system to Visual FoxPro. Praise God that this migration has been proceeding well.
    • Pray for wisdom, guidance, and unity as we try to determine what further architectural and user interface enhancements we should make to the NTMAA system. Pray for wisdom and guidance as we try to prioritize our various potential projects.
    • Pray that God would give us humble hearts and make us a real blessing here at NTM Headquarters.
    • Praise God for the work He is doing around the world, reaching the unreached with the Gospel of Christ.
    • Pray that God would continue to raise up folks to be partners in this task, through going, giving, or praying.

    Praise & Prayer Updates: (10/05/2001)

    • Paula's dad, Walter Mayshar finished his battle with brain cancer and has gone to be with the Lord. It was a difficult battle, but we rejoice that his suffering is over. Pray for Paula, her mom, and their family as they miss him very much.
    • Hannah is making definite progress in her speech. You noticed her great vocabulary in our last newsletter J. Paula is now taking her twice a week to Orlando for physical, occupational, and speech/language therapy. We continue to pray for her overall development and for her growth, as she has not gained much weight in the last year.
    • Our family took turns fighting a virus or something from the middle of August until nearly the end of September. It feels like we've had a lot of sickness lately. Pray that we can get back to good health and stay that way for a long time.
    • We are currently beta-testing the Visual FoxPro version of our NTM Accounting & Administrative system. I have recently completed an NTMAA Strategic Options document, listing some of the steps involved and anticipated costs and benefits of our various options for the future. Pray for wisdom and guidance in our programming direction and priorities.
    • Based on pursuing various leads, NTM has recently concluded that our three brothers (Dave Mankins, Mark Rich, and Rick Tenenoff, who were kidnapped by guerillas in Panama in 1993) were killed in 1996; we would appreciate your prayer for their families. Please pray also for Martin & Gracia Burnham, NTM missionaries kidnapped this past May in the Philippines.

Praise & Prayer: Paula's Dad Goes Home (09/01/2001)

On September 1, Paula's father, Walter Mayshar finished his battle with brain cancer and went to be with the Lord.

Paula's father was diagnosed in April with an aggressive brain cancer. Radiation and brain surgery helped give him a few more good months, but the cancer continued to grow and eventually his body was unable to function properly.

We would appreciate your prayer for Paula, her mom, and her sisters during this time. A memorial service will be held at the Tucson VFW building on Saturday, September 8, at 12:15 PM.

Prayer: Fighting Sickness in Our Family (09/01/2001)

We have been fighting a lot of sickness in our family lately. The last couple weeks we have been fighting some kind of respiratory flu which has been quite difficult.

At this point, Joy and Nicholas are pretty much over it. Hannah had been running a high fever and had eye infections. Her eyes are fine now and her fever is down, but she still has a cough.

Paula has been sick for about 10 days now and John for 5 days. We are past the high fever stage, but continue to fight sore throats, ear infections, coughing, and laryngitis.

We would appreciate your prayer that we would get over this and stay healthy for a long time. Paula is scheduled to travel to Tucson on September 7 (for her dad's memorial service) and John will be left to take care of the kids, so we would both like to be in good health.

    Praise & Prayer: Hannah's Development (09/01/2001)

Hannah has made a lot of encouraging progress in the last several months. It is clear that she understands quite a bit of what we say. In addition, she has quite a few words that she can use to communicate with us. These include ma-ma, da-da, hi, up, no, mmm (means yes), o-tay (ok), joos, daw (dog), beh (bear), na-nuh (Hannah), aw-duh (all-done), i-uv-oo (one of Dad's favorites), uh-oh, ba-bi (rabbit) and tank-oo. She is still significantly behind in speech, but we are encouraged that she is making progress.

Hannah has recently started working with a new physical therapist. The therapist evaluated her and concluded that she is significantly behind in her physical coordination.

Hannah has recently started a special diet: a GFCF (gluten free, casein free) diet. Apparently, researchers have found a number of developmentally delayed kids have difficulty with gluten (in wheat) and/or casein (in dairy products) and do much better on a GFCF diet. So we have been trying it to see if it helps her.

Hannah recently had an MRI and an EEG to make sure that there were no significant problems with her brain. The MRI showed that her brain is a normal shape and size. The EEG did not show any seizures, but it did show what the doctor called a "diffuse slowness" that is common among kids with developmental delays.

Thanks for praying for our precious Hannah.

    Praise: NTM Programming Update (09/01/2001)

We are encouraged that our Computer Services leadership has reached a decision to continue to move our NTM Accounting & Administrative system forward in Visual Foxpro.

Our long range plan is to enhance the NTMAA system (by adding multi-currency and outstation support) so that it can be used as a worldwide accounting system. We also plan to release it as a distributed system so that our various NTM branches can use it to maintain personnel records locally, which can then be sent across the internet (using XML) to update a master database at NTM headquarters, which can then be re-distributed.

Our current priority continues to be the migration of the NTMAA system from Foxpro for DOS up to Visual Foxpro. We have made good progress in this area and the Visual Foxpro version of our NTMAA is currently in "beta" test. A new programmer, Andy Corley, has recently joined our team and has already been a big asset in finding solutions to some of the bugs that have been uncovered during the beta test.

As far as future projects, there are a number of options available, which need to be prioritized. John is currently working on a Strategic Options document for the NTMAA system.

    Praise & Prayer Update: (05/29/2001)

Hannah's Development - We recently saw a developmental specialist in Melbourne. He has recommended further testing, as well as a trial of a special gluten-free casein-free diet.

John's Health - My energy level still varies and I also have some muscle aches in my arms and back, but I am thankful for the health that God has given me.

Paula's Dad - Wally continues to make good progress in his rehabilitation and is continuing radiation treatments for his brain cancer. He is appreciating the remaining days that God has given him to enjoy family, friends, and the little things of life.

Nicholas' Bone Tumors - We were encouraged to hear that Nicholas' bones are growing well, despite his hereditary bone tumors (osteochondromas). At this point, the doctor does not see any need for further surgery.

NTM Programming - We are working on migrating our NTM Accounting & Administrative system from FoxPro for DOS up to Visual FoxPro. I was also able to attend a training seminar in Orlando recently, learning more about creating Internet applications with Visual FoxPro.

    Praise: Visual Foxpro (04/26/2001)

Our long-term plans for our NTM Accounting & Administrative system are not entirely clear, but we have been approved to migrate our system from Foxpro for DOS up to Visual Foxpro.

Since we are not planning to totally revamp it at this time, it will not yet take advantage of all the object-oriented features in Visual Foxpro. It will, however, be a true 32 bit Windows application and will enable us, therefore, to move away from the DOS platform.

Sometimes it is hard to see very far into the fog, but this appears to be the best direction to head at this time and I am encouraged that we are taking this step.

    Prayer: Paula's Dad (04/26/2001)

We recently discovered that Paula's father, Walter Mayshar, has an aggressive form of brain cancer. He ended up having an emergency catscan, followed by emergency surgery to remove a mass from his brain, which was later determined to be cancerous.

Within days after the surgery, his condition deterioriated again and it was determined that fluids were building up in his brain, causing excess pressure. Emergency surgery was again performed to install a shunt, which relieved the pressure and greatly reduced the symptoms.

He has made good progress in his therapy and has been able to return home. His time on earth is short, perhaps weeks or months, but he has a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Women in Missions group at our home church, Boca Raton Community Church, purchased a ticket for Paula to spend some time with her family in Tucson. As a registered nurse, Paula was able to be a real blessing to her father and her family. It was hard, though, saying goodbye to her dad. We would appreciate your prayers for Paula's dad and his family.

    Praise & Prayer: Hannah's Development (04/26/2001)

We are looking to the Lord to see Hannah develop into the person that He wants her to be. She is significantly behind in her speech, but we are encouraged that she seems to be understanding more.

She will now come to us, take us to the kitchen, and indicate that she wants us to open the refrigerator door (so she can scope out the selection). We are also starting to work with a new language/speech therapist who uses a technique called "prompting" to help Hannah start to form words.

We recently had some lab tests done and we are encouraged that Hannah's thyroid appears to be working fine. She is short for her age and we had been concerned that perhaps she might have a thyroid problem.

We also expect to be seeing a doctor in Melbourne on May 1 who has a lot of experience with developmentally delayed children.

Thanks for praying for our precious Hannah.

    Praise & Prayer: John's Health (04/01/2001)

John has been doing so much better lately! For this, we are very thankful to our Lord, the great Physician, and to you who have been praying.

John's strength and energy do vary some and he continues to have some backaches. We are thankful that his arm muscles have not been bothering him lately.

John's doctor is recommending an increase in his thyroid medication.

    Prayer: Our Relationships (04/01/2001)

We would appreciate your ongoing prayer for our relationships - with God, with each other as husband and wife, with our kids as dad and mom, and with co-workers.

We find ourselves quite busy, almost to the point of being overwhelmed at times, and yet there is so much to do. We also realize more and more our own inadequacy to be the kind of people that God wants us to be. We need God to live through us, to love through us, to refresh our hearts and our spirits and to produce His love, peace, joy, and life in and through us.

Pray for wisdom in training our children. There is so much for them to learn. We want them to come to know, love, and serve God. We want them to learn to be obedient, respectful, and to be a blessing. And, finally, we want them to learn the things they need to know to function properly in this world.

Praise: Our Trip to Arizona went well (02/23/2001)

We returned this week from a six week trip to Arizona to install the NTM Accounting System at our NTM Aviation center in McNeal, Arizona.

We praise the Lord for safety in our travels (we drove over 6000 miles in 6 weeks), that John's health held up well (He had been sick the day before we left and we wondered if we were going to have to postpone the trip again), and the installation was successful.

Paula and the kids stayed in Tucson with Paula's parents while John drove to McNeal, returning each weekend to Tucson. We were able to visit with Paula's parents and sisters and a number of friends in the Tucson area. We also were able to visit Desert Son Community Church in Tucson (which is now meeting in the building formerly owned by Paula's home church, Valley Baptist Church) and share a little about NTM and our ministry with our brothers and sisters there.

Down in McNeal, John spent time with the bookkeeper, Charlie Patton, and the folks in the aircraft parts and avionics departments. We were able to install the NTM Aviation Accounting system (a subset of the NTM Accounting and Administrative system), make a number of enhancements to the system, and help the folks there transition to the new system.

    Praise & Prayer: John's Health (02/23/2001)

John is doing pretty well. The bad bacteria (c.diff.) which plagued him for months has not returned and his digestive system appears to be working well.

His strength and energy still vary quite a bit and he continues to have various muscle aches. Prior to our episode with c.diff., John's energy level was great and he is looking forward to regaining his full normal health. We're not sure if these symptoms are residual, or if they relate to his thyroid, a possible candida overgrowth, or allergies which may have developed as a result of the digestive tract infection.

In any case, we would appreciate your continued prayer for continued recovery for John.

    Praise & Prayer: Hannah's Development (02/23/2001)

We are encouraged to see that Hannah is understanding more. Understanding our language is a good step toward speech. She is also babbling more, another encouraging sign.

Continue to pray that Hannah will learn to use some meaningful words soon. She is a precious little girl and we enjoy her very much.

Praise & Prayer: Health Update (12/31/00)

John recently had some further tests done to see if there is anything else going on with his immune system that may be delaying his recovery or causing some of his residual symptoms (fatigue, tired achey muscles, slight hoarseness).

Fortunately, most of the tests came back normal. However, one of his immune system levels (IGE) was quite elevated. It is not clear exactly what this means or is indicative of; one doctor, however, suggested that it may relate to an allergic reaction.

We are also waiting on the results of a candida test. Candida, which is normally in our digestive tract in small quantities, can also overgrow and cause systemic problems when antibiotics wipe out the good bacteria.

Pray that John will continue to improve and that the Lord will help his body get back to full, good, normal health.

Praise & Prayer: Upcoming Trip to Arizona (12/31/00)

For some time now, John has been enhancing the NTM Accounting & Administrative system in order to install a subset of it (the NTM Aviation Accounting system) at our NTM Aviation center in McNeal, Arizona. John made an initial trip to McNeal in early July to demo the system and planned to return in August to install the system. Due to John's health problems, we had to delay the return trip to Arizona.

At this time, however, it appears that John has recovered sufficiently to re-schedule our trip to Arizona. We are planning, therefore, God willing, to leave on Jan. 5 for Arizona. We will take 7 days to drive there, visiting friends in Pensacola, FL, Kosciusko, MS, and Dallas, TX along the way. We would appreciate your prayers for safety, for strength and energy for John, that we will be a blessing to folks in Arizona and along the way, and that the installation will be successful.

We are also looking forward to spending time with family and friends in Arizona, including our new friends at Desert Son Community Church.

Praise: John is doing much better! (12/11/00)

As a result of taking antibiotics for a salivary duct infection in July 2000, John developed a bacterial infection (clostridium difficile) in his digestive tract.

This bacterial infection caused a number of gastro-intestinal symptoms and resulted in John losing 20 lbs. (from his already meager 150 lbs.) and becoming quite weak and fatigued.

From August through November, we fought this monster bacteria. John was on several courses of powerful antibiotics (flagyl, vancomycin) in an attempt to wipe out the c.diff. bacteria. Of course, these antibiotics can also disrupt the normal intestinal flora, the same problem that caused the c.diff. overgrowth.

We are happy to report that John has now been off antibiotics for over a month and it appears that the bacterial infection is either gone or at least under control! John's strength and energy are returning. We are thankful to the Lord and to all of you who have been praying for us.

Prayer: Hannah's development appears delayed. (12/11/00)

It has become apparent to us that Hannah's (our youngest daughter) development is somewhat delayed, especially in the area of speech and language.

We have had her evaluated and she is now receiving weekly therapy (physical, occupational, and speech/language). Pray that her language and speech will continue to progress. At this point, she is not really using any words yet (except for "Mama").

We also are planning to consult with a neuro-developmental expert who can give us guidance on how to help stimulate her development and help her with sensory integration.
